What is Professional Behavior?

Professional behavior is something that many of us misunderstand the actual meaning of it, or we understand the importance of it once it is too late.

Professional behavior at work is a lot more than wearing the proper outfit; it’s about:

  • How you behave when you are stressed.
  • How you interact with less powerful people. 
  • How do you say “NO” and lots more. 

Practice Professional Behavior in the Initial stage of your professional life; before you get used to the wrong habits. It is good to groom yourself at the initial phase of your Professional Life. 

Professional Behavior is easy to learn by following the below 9 simple rules.

1. Listening skills are the key point for Perfect Professional Behavior.

The most crucial quality in any professional life is active listening skills. Give your empty mind while you are listening to someone. Do not assume the conversation before the opposite person keeps his point in front of you. 

Give your ears to the speaker. You may get answers to all those questions you were waiting to ask. 

2. Careful Delivery

When you are presenting your ideas and thoughts, be very precise. Be confident about what you are talking about. Talk to yourself before you speak out. It gives an idea of what words to use and what to be ignored. Don’t use jargon in professional life.

Manage your emotions and body language, especially during stressful times.

Learn to recognize and control what you say when you are frustrated, overwhelmed, tired, and emotional while conversing.

3. Control Emotions

Don’t bring your emotions down while expressing your thoughts. 

  • During the meeting, if you feel embarrassed, don’t react. Give some time and use the appropriate words to answer back. This may take some time to learn, but it is a good habit to practice. 
  • When you are unhappy about your appraisal result, give yourself a couple of days to decide what to talk about, how to convey the message, and what not to talk about.

Your correct behavior and respect for the other person must be kept in mind while conversing during your awkward situation.

4. Punctuality

Instead of being on time for a meeting/office, try reaching out before time. Plan your daily schedule on a slot basis:- emails, meetings, breaks & Actions to achieve Goals. 

Respect the time of colleagues, clients, and fellow employees, regardless of rank or status. Everyone’s job is as important as yours. If you are committing a time, stick to that. If you are not able to make it, inform them much prior. This is one of the most critical points in the Professional Behavior list. 

Keep a day free every week without plans so that you can finish your pending work of the week. (if any). This will help you to achieve your goal on time.

5. Boundary Lines

It is critical to set boundaries lines. 

You need to know what you are willing and unwilling to tolerate while putting the boundary lines. Keep your relationship professional, which avoids people taking you for granted at work. Employees and employers must maintain a good line of demarcation between their personal and professional life and act accordingly toward company goals.

If you are sticking to your principles and ethics, it makes it difficult for people to cross the line.

6. Reliability defines your Professional Behavior

Be honest at your work. Take responsibility for your actions.

Take ownership of your mistake if things go wrong from your end. Don’t blame, make excuses, or deny anything.

Do not accept the reword of someone else projects/ideas. Share genuine suggestions/feedback if anyone seeks it. 

7. Personal Life

Avoid personal calls during work hours. In case of an emergency requirement, take a personal call out of the office while you have a break time.

One of the common mistakes people make is, bringing personal issues wearing on their facial expressions. This may disturb your productive day and your reputation at the office. Taking an off is better if things are not in hand. 

8. Integrity Awareness.

When you are an employee of your company, you are not only representing yourself; you are also representing the Brand. Stick to the company policy and process. 

If a deviation from the policy and process is required, document it in the mail to a responsible approver instead of discussing it. This will prevent you from getting into any trap. 

If you face any issue at work, you should talk with the HR department or your superior. 

9. Avoid unnecessary talks.

At times you may face unwanted questions shot towards you that you are not comfortable answering. Handle it wisely, be polite, and use the proper tone for not answering. Try keeping the conversation simple but with messages firmly on what you are trying to convey. 

Use Professional Language

  • I am uncomfortable with this question. Please don’t mind me.
  • I prefer not to talk about that.
  • I am sorry that’s private.
  • I prefer not to discuss this right now at this event.
  • That’s too personal. That’s not appropriate to discuss.

And the best way is to smile and change the topic, and the person will definitely understand that you don’t want to answer it.


  • Behavior is what you are from inside. 
  • A debate is worth losing if it means losing control of your behavior.
  • Everyone has to work together to achieve the company’s goals.
  • Just focus on the Company Goal. 
  • Do not get emotionally connected to People, Projects & Processes.
  • Apologize for errors or misunderstandings using appropriate language.
